  • There is a serial number on all planters. Look on the right rear corner of the planter frame. Ther will be a stamped number there. I do not have a list of the serial numbers by year but your JD dealer should be able to get the year for you once you have the number. Look in your operators manual on the page 'TO THE PURCHASER' down near the bottom for the description of serial number location above the box list your planter number. • Nice looking restore job. I am just getting into tractors so have not gotton to implements. I am not a dealer, but have some implement manuals. I have just one JD. It happens to be a granular herbicide attachment used on 290 and 490 corn planters. So if any of you are interested let me know. It is a tri fold, 6 printed pages including the front. nu B25081B-J2 on bottom of page. A few stains but fair condition. BobRck Cannon wrote on Wednesday, December 13, 2000 (PST):

  • I have been looking for a 290 or similar planter for ever. Do you know of anyplace I can get on in working order? It would work great for sweetcorn and pumpkins.Joe wrote on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 (PDT):
  • Just a personal opinion, but I beleive this was one of the best planters of the era that John Deere built. I have two, one for spare parts, the other I pull behind a forecart with my team of mules to plant a few acres of corn and peas every year. Thanks for the photo!Don Ferguson wrote on Tuesday, August 28, 2001 (PDT):
  • Nice job on the planter restoration. Have located oneand considered purchase. It is 3 pt hitch 2 row. In real good shape. Was told it was a JD 280. Perhaps you could lend some info. Price is $300.00. Fertilizer boxes and seed cans are in good shape. Thanks, Dondon haskell wrote on Monday, September 03, 2001 (PDT):

  • I really appreciated your efforts on restoring this planter. I remember my Dad having a 290 when I was growing up and usually used the 9N Ford tractor when planting or the 44 B JD. Either way, we covered alot of ground and that was during the days when you could enjoy farming! Thanks for your efforts to restore the past! David B wrote on Sunday, March 24, 2002 (PST):
  • Should be able to get seed plates from any seed corn dealer. Operators manuals are still aviable through John Deere dealers. Have taken mine all apart, painted and now going back together. Might plant a little sweet corn but think I'll plant the rest with the 12 row Ryan VanderVeen wrote on Sunday, June 23, 2002 (PDT):
  • What a great looking planter! Can you give me an idea of price ranges you would pay for a working non-restored one and a restored planter, such as yours? I would love to restore one to go along with my JD 'B'.ROYBOY wrote on Saturday, August 17, 2002 (PDT):

I might be wrong, and it won't be the first time, but it may not have a serial number. We had one and I can't recall ever seeing a serial on it, other than the fact it had a 494-A decal on it. If it has one, I'd look near the clutch assembly areas or on the main frame close to the tongue.
